UPSC Civil Services Examination: Overview

The UPSC Civil Services Examination is conducted in three stages:

Preliminary Examination (Prelims) – MCQ based Screening test
Main Examination (Mains) – Written descriptive examination
Interview / Personality Test – Final stage evaluation

Only candidates who qualify each stage are allowed to appear for the next stage. The final merit list is prepared based on the marks obtained in the Mains Examination and the Interview, while the Prelims acts only as a screening stage.

The UPSC Prelims consists of two objective-type papers conducted on the same day.

Key Features of UPSC Prelims

Questions are objective type (MCQ)
Negative marking: 1/3rd marks deducted for incorrect answers
GS I cut-off changes every year according to the difficulty of the paper.

CSAT is qualifying in nature.
Candidates must score 33% in CSAT to qualify

UPSC Prelims Syllabus

CSAT (General Studies Paper II) (Generally conducted between 2:30 PM to 04:30 PM)

The Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) evaluates the candidate’s logical and analytical skills.

Although the CSAT paper is qualifying, candidates should not ignore it, as failure to secure 33% marks will disqualify the candidate regardless of their GS score.

The PRELIMS paper is qualifying in nature where the candidate has to score 33% to qualify and this marks will not be added up while arriving at the final rank list.

UPSC Mains Examination Pattern

Candidates who qualify the Prelims appear for the UPSC Mains Examination, which consists of 9 descriptive papers conducted over several days. UPSC Mains examination continues for 5 to 7 days. There are 9 papers in mains examination and 2 papers are qualifying in nature. These 2 papers are two language papers. A candidate needs to score 25% of total marks or 75 out of 300 in both the language papers. The paper distribution of mains examination is given below table

GS Paper II – Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations

This paper focuses on governance and the functioning of the Indian political system.

Important Points

The papers on Indian languages and English (Paper A and paper B) will be of qualifying nature and the marks obtained in these papers will not be counted for ranking.
The papers on Indian languages and English (Paper A and paper B) will be of Matriculation or equivalent standard.
The papers on Essay, General Studies and Optional Subject of only such candidates will be taken cognizance who attain 25% marks in ‘Indian Language’ and 25% in ‘English’ as minimum qualifying standards in these qualifying papers.
Marks obtained by the candidates for the Paper I-VII only will be counted for merit ranking.
The question papers for the main examination will be of conventional (essay) type and each paper will be of 3-hour duration.
Candidates will have the option to answer all the question papers, except the Qualifying Language Papers, Paper-A and Paper-B, in any one of the languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India or in English.
The question papers (other than the literature of language papers) will be set in Hindi and English only.

UPSC Interview (Personality Test)

Candidates who qualify the Mains examination are called for the UPSC Personality Test, conducted at the UPSC headquarters in New Delhi.
