1 . National Investment Policy for Urea–2026 (NIPU–2026)

  • Recently, the Union Cabinet approved the National Investment Policy for Urea–2026 (NIPU–2026).
  • The policy aims to encourage new investments in gas-based urea manufacturing units, increase domestic production, reduce import dependence and strengthen India’s fertilizer security. It succeeds the New Investment Policy (NIP)-2012.
  • Nodal Ministry: Department of Fertilizers, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers.
  • India is the second-largest consumer of fertilizers and among the largest consumers of urea
  • India consumes about 4 crore tonnes of urea annually.
  • Domestic production is around 3 crore tonnes, while the remaining ~1 crore tonnes is imported, making India import-dependent for roughly one-fourth of its requirement.
  • Urea [CO(NH₂)₂] contains 46% Nitrogen, the highest among commonly used solid nitrogenous fertilizers.
  • Neem-coated urea has been 100% mandatory since 2015 to improve Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE) and reduce diversion.
  • Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) applies only to Phosphatic & Potassic (P&K) fertilizers; Urea remains outside NBS under a separate subsidy mechanism.

 

2. Ancient Kewra Fossils from Assam

  • Recently, scientists from the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP), Lucknow, discovered 24-million-year-old fossil leaves of the Kewra (Kevda) plant from the Tikak Parbat Formation of the Makum Coalfield, Assam.
  • The discovery extends the evolutionary history of the Pandanaceae family in India and highlights India’s role as a refuge for ancient tropical flora.
  • The fossils date back to the Late Oligocene Epoch (~24 million years ago).
  • Kewra (Pandanus odorifer) is valued for its fragrant flowers, from which Kewra water and Kewra attar are prepared.
  • The discovery indicates that India acted as a climatic refuge for several ancient tropical plant lineages after global cooling around 34 million years ago.
  • Earlier fossil records of Pandanaceae were known from Europe and North America (85–66 million years ago); the Assam fossils bridge these with younger Asian records.
  • Used in traditional medicine (Ayurveda) for its cooling, digestive and aromatic properties.
  • Leaves are woven into mats, baskets, hats, ropes and handicrafts, especially in coastal regions.
  • Grown as an ornamental plant in gardens due to its distinctive foliage and fragrant flowers.
  • The plant also helps in sand dune stabilization and coastal protection, making it useful in coastal ecosystem restoration.
  • Odisha (particularly Ganjam district) is the largest producer of Kewra essence (Kewra water & attar) in India.

 

3. SYNCHN 2026

  • Recently, the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI) organised the 3rd annual industry-business meet – SYNCHN 2026 (Synergistic Collaboration in Healthcare Innovation) at the NCR Biotech Science Cluster, Faridabad.
  • The event focused on accelerating the translation of scientific discoveries into affordable healthcare products through collaboration among academia, industry, startups, investors and policymakers.
  • It is the flagship annual industry–academia platform of THSTI for promoting translational research and commercialization of biomedical innovations.
  • THSTI (Translational Health Science and Technology Institute) is an institute of the Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council (BRIC) under the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science & Technology.
  • BRIC (Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council) is an autonomous body established by subsuming 13 autonomous institutions of DBT to strengthen integrated biotechnology research and innovation.

 

4. Biomedical Research Career Programme (BRCP) – Phase III

  • Recently, the Union Minister launched Phase III of the Biomedical Research Career Programme (BRCP) with a total outlay of ₹1,500 crore, jointly funded by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and the Wellcome Trust (UK).
  • The programme aims to build a globally competitive biomedical research workforce in India.
  • Launched: 2008 as a partnership between DBT and Wellcome Trust (UK).
  • Implementing Agency: India Alliance (DBT–Wellcome Trust India Alliance)
  • Nodal Ministry: Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science & Technology.
  • Phase III Duration:
    • Implementation: 2025–26 to 2030–31
    • Servicing of fellowships/grants: up to 2037–38.
  • It provides:
    • Early Career Fellowships
    • Intermediate Fellowships
    • Collaborative Research Grants
    • Research Management Programme.
  • The programme aims to accelerate development of diagnostics, therapeutics, vaccines and healthcare technologies aligned with national priorities

 

5. Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS)

  • Recently, the Union Cabinet approved the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS) with a budgetary outlay of ₹62,500 crore for FY 2026–27 to FY 2030–31 to deepen domestic value addition, strengthen supply-chain resilience and make India a global mobile manufacturing hub.
  • Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY).
  • The scheme aims to:
    • Scale up mobile phone production.
    • Deepen domestic value addition.
    • Strengthen component manufacturing ecosystem.
    • Enhance global competitiveness.
    • Build Indian brands and promote design & R&D
