- GI Tagis governed under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, which came into force in 2003.
- GI Registryis located at Chennai and is administered by the Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trade Marks (CGPDTM) under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce & Industry.
- A registered GI is valid for 10 yearsand is renewable indefinitely for successive periods of 10 years.
- Unlike a patent, a GI cannot be transferred, assigned or licensed independentlyof the geographical origin.

- Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj (1874–1922)was the ruler of the princely state of Kolhapur (present-day Maharashtra) during the British period.
