- The Ministry of Panchayati Raj (MoPR) launched DAANVEER, a citizen participation initiative to strengthen the digital infrastructure of Gram Panchayats by enabling voluntary contribution of computers through the Meri Panchayat App.
- DAANVEER is an initiative of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, developed in collaboration with the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and DigiHaat.
- It provides a transparent, end-to-end digital platform for citizens, institutions and the Indian diaspora to donate quality-verified computer bundles to eligible Gram Panchayats under the tagline “Give Back to Your Village.”
- The initiative integrates the Meri Panchayat App with the DigiHaat marketplace, enabling donors to select pre-approved computer bundles, track delivery and installation, and receive a digital certificate of appreciation.
- DAANVEER seeks to bridge the digital infrastructure gap in nearly 5 lakh Gram Panchayats, improving service delivery, transparency and local governance.
- It complements the Ministry’s digital governance ecosystem comprising:
- e-GramSwaraj – Planning, budgeting, accounting and monitoring of Panchayats.
- Meri Panchayat App – Citizen interface for Panchayat services and information.
- AuditOnline – Online auditing of Panchayat accounts.
- Gram Manchitra – GIS-based planning platform for Gram Panchayats.
- Sabha Saar – AI-enabled platform for recording and generating Gram Sabha proceedings.
- DigiHaat – Government-supported digital marketplace connecting producers and buyers
2. Telecom Manufacturing Zone (TMZ)

- The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Government of Madhya Pradesh will sign an MoU for establishing India’s first Telecom Manufacturing Zone (TMZ) at Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh). The initiative aims to create a dedicated ecosystem for telecom equipment manufacturing, promote indigenous technology, and strengthen India’s position in the global telecom value chain.
- Telecom Manufacturing Zone (TMZ) is a dedicated industrial ecosystem for manufacturing telecom equipment, network hardware and allied technologies, with a focus on design, innovation and value addition.
- The initiative aims to promote Aatmanirbhar Bharat, attract investments, strengthen domestic supply chains, encourage MSMEs and start-ups, and generate employment.
- TMZ complements the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Telecom & Networking Products, launched in 2021, to boost domestic manufacturing and exports of telecom equipment.
- It also supports the objectives of the National Digital Communications Policy (NDCP), 2018, which seeks to establish India as a global hub for digital communications manufacturing.
- The initiative aligns with India’s Bharat 6G Vision, promoting indigenous R&D and next-generation telecom technologies.
- Department of Telecommunications (DoT) functions under the Ministry of Communications and is responsible for telecom policy, licensing, spectrum management, and promotion of the telecommunications sector.
- Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC) serves as DoT’s technical arm for standardisation, testing and certification of telecom equipment.
3. Electronics Development Fund (EDF)

- The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) informed Parliament that the Electronics Development Fund (EDF) has invested in eight Daughter Funds, which have supported 128 startups and companies engaged in Electronics System Design & Manufacturing (ESDM) and Information Technology (IT), strengthening India’s innovation ecosystem.
- Electronics Development Fund (EDF) is a Fund of Funds (FoF) established by the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) to promote market-driven innovation in Electronics System Design & Manufacturing (ESDM) and Information Technology (IT).
- EDF invests in SEBI-registered Venture Capital Funds (Daughter Funds), which in turn provide risk capital to technology startups and companies.
- Canbank Venture Capital Fund Ltd. (CVCFL) is the Fund Manager, while MeitY is the Anchor Investor.
- Investment decisions are based on innovation capability, indigenous technology development, IP creation, technical competence and commercial scalability.
- The fund aims to promote product innovation, indigenous IP creation, technology commercialisation, and strengthen India’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem.
- Electronics System Design & Manufacturing (ESDM) refers to the complete value chain of design, development, manufacturing, testing and servicing of electronic products and components.
- EDF complements flagship initiatives such as the Semicon India Programme, Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Large-Scale Electronics Manufacturing, PLI Scheme for IT Hardware, and Design Linked Incentive (DLI) Scheme.
- The initiative supports the objectives of Digital India, Make in India, and Atmanirbhar Bharat by promoting domestic innovation and reducing import dependence in the electronics sector.
4. Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT)

- The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) celebrated 25 years of the successful operation of the 2-metre Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT) at Hanle, Ladakh, India’s premier high-altitude optical observatory. The Union Budget 2026–27 has also announced an upgraded 3.7-m HCT and a 7-m National Large Optical-Infrared Telescope (NLOT) at Hanle.
- Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT) is a 2-m optical and near-infrared telescope located at the Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO), Hanle (Ladakh) at an altitude of about 4,500 m.
- The telescope achieved First Light in September 2000 and was dedicated to the nation in 2001. It is named after Nobel Laureate Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar.
- HCT has been operated remotely from IIA, Bengaluru since 2001 using an INSAT satellite communication link.
- Hanle is among the world’s best astronomical sites due to over 250 clear nights annually, low atmospheric water vapour, high altitude, and minimal light pollution, making it ideal for optical and near-infrared astronomy.
- Major scientific contributions include studies on exoplanets (including TRAPPIST-1 system), supernovae, gamma-ray bursts, comets, variable stars, nebulae, galaxies, and active galactic nuclei (AGN).
- The observatory also hosts the MACE (Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment) telescope, HAGAR (High Altitude Gamma Ray) telescope, and the GROWTH-India Telescope, making Hanle India’s leading multi-wavelength astronomy hub.
- The Hanle Dark Sky Reserve, India’s first Dark Sky Reserve, was established to preserve the region’s exceptionally dark skies for astronomical observations.
- The proposed 7-m Upgraded HCT and 13.7-m National Large Optical-Infrared Telescope (NLOT) aim to significantly enhance India’s capabilities in optical astronomy and complement facilities like GMRT and AstroSat.
5. Global Tiger Day & Tiger Conservation in India

- On Global Tiger Day (29 July), the Prime Minister reaffirmed India’s commitment to science-based conservation, community participation, sustainable development, and mitigating human-wildlife conflict. India is home to nearly 70% of the world’s wild tiger population, making it the global leader in tiger conservation.
- Global Tiger Day (International Tiger Day) is observed annually on 29 July and was established in 2010 at the Petersburg Tiger Summit (Russia) to promote global tiger conservation.
- India has the largest wild tiger population in the world, with 3,682 tigers (2022) as per the All India Tiger Estimation (AITE), 2022.
- Project Tiger was launched on 1 April 1973 at Jim Corbett National Park (Uttarakhand) to ensure a viable population of tigers in their natural habitats.
- The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) is a statutory body constituted under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972 (amended in 2006) to oversee Project Tiger and tiger conservation.
- India currently has 58 Tiger Reserves spread across 18 States, constituting the world’s largest network of protected tiger habitats.
- Tiger estimation in India is conducted every four years using the All India Tiger Estimation (AITE), one of the world’s largest wildlife monitoring exercises, based on camera traps, sign surveys and statistical modelling.
- The Conservation Assured | Tiger Standards (CA|TS) is a globally recognised accreditation system for effective tiger habitat management. India has the highest number of CA|TS-accredited Tiger Reserves
- The International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), launched by India in 2023, promotes global cooperation for the conservation of seven big cat species—Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Cheetah, Jaguar and Puma.
- The Tiger is listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List, included in Appendix I of CITES, and protected under Schedule I of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
