Delhi Andaman Nicobar Island service is a group B central service. The officers under this service report to Ministry of Home affairs, the government of India. They are in charge of a variety of administrative tasks in India’s Union Territories and the National Capital Territory of Delhi.
Officers of DANICS are trained at the Union Territory Civil Service Directorate in Karkardooma, New Delhi. The officers are provided around two years of initial training. Thereafter, they are initially posted as Assistant Collector (District Administration, Delhi) or Sub Divisional Magistrates (SDM). After attaining seniority, they get promotion into Senior Grades (JAG-I, JAG-II/SAG)
Thereafter they get inducted into the AGMUT cadre of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). The DANICS officers get deputation in the autonomous bodies of Delhi like MCD, NDMC, DDA etc. or as Deputy Secretary in different ministries of Delhi Government.
The middle level and senior level administration of the Delhi Government as well as other Union Territories like the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Daman & Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli are served by officers of the DANICS civil service. However, before being inducted into the IAS, they spend the majority of their time in Delhi and are occasionally transferred to a Union Territory.
IAS and DANICS are both selected from the same examination,i.e., Civil Service Examination conducted by UPSC. However, DANICS can be compared to the service of state civil services. The work profile is more or less similar to a civil servant selected through state public service commission throughout. Initially, an IAS and a DANICS officer start their carrer from the same level. At some point an IAS gets faster promotions and reach the senior level whereas a DANICS officer is promoted to IAS after completing 8-9 years in service (However, this tenure is getting stretched in recent years).
