UPSC Topper Sahars Kumar AIR 153 UPSC 2024

Selections from West Bengal in UPSC in 2024 & 2023, Sahars Kumar, Ballygunge, Kolkata resident cracks UPSC with AIR 153

In the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2024, West Bengal showcased remarkable success over the last two years, with approximately 20 candidates making it to the final list.

Some of the major names in this success story include Meghna Chakraborty (AIR 79), Sahars Kumar (AIR 153), Saima Khan (AIR 165), Ashish Kumar (AIR 338), Bratati Dutta (AIR 346), Priya Purohit (Reserve List), among others.

Interestingly, these students went to Delhi only for their mock interview preparation, not for core foundational coaching.

One standout performer among them is Sahars Kumar (AIR 153). Originally from Bihar, Sahars is an IIT Kanpur and IIM Kolkata graduate who worked in the private sector in Gurgaon before taking a break during the COVID-19 pandemic.

When the Times of India interviewed Sahars Kumar (AIR 153), a resident of Bondel Road in Kolkata, he said, “During COVID, like everyone else, I was locked at home and had no option of going to Delhi. That’s when I came to know about Educrat IAS coaching at Park Street. I joined the Aarambh batch at the Park Street Centre in 2021, and then there was no looking back.”

Sahars became emotional as he recalled reaching one of the lowest points of his life—failing to clear the UPSC interview in CSE 2022 and then not qualifying the UPSC Prelims in 2023. He shared, “It was a bad phase, and I used to reach out to Sir at Educrat IAS for guidance, motivation, and light. Sir would take time out in the evenings to meet me, motivate me, and give me hope and belief—that I was almost there and that this too shall pass.”

Sahars highlighted that the key moments of his preparation journey were the foundational classroom sessions at Educrat IAS, Park Street Centre. There, he realized that UPSC preparation requires an offline, disciplined environment with regular mock tests, answer writing practice, doubt-clearing sessions, and student engagement. He also recalled how he would often sit alone with Sir for hours at a café, discussing the finer details and nuances of personality development for the mock interview stage.

When the Hindu journalist asked Sahars about the moment the result came out, he said, “I was having lunch and knew the result was about to be released. Suddenly, I saw my phone ringing—it was Sir from Educrat IAS. Sir just said one word: ‘Sahars, it’s IPS!’ And I was like, ‘What, Sir? IPS? Are you serious?’ Then Sir confirmed that I had secured an All-India Rank of 153It was probably the best phone call I have ever received in my life.”
