5. Who is more powerful, IAS or IPS? What is the salary of an IAS, IPS officer? Where is the training of IAS/IPS Officers conducted?

The power and authority of IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officers and IPS (Indian Police Service) officers in India are distinct and serve different purposes. Both services are part of the All India Services and fall under the control of the Union Government.

IAS officers primarily handle administrative responsibilities. They are responsible for the implementation and execution of government policies, as well as the general administration of a district or a specific department. IAS officers often hold key positions in the bureaucracy, such as district magistrates, commissioners, or secretaries in various government departments. Their roles encompass a wide range of sectors, including finance, health, education, and more.

IPS officers, on the other hand, are responsible for maintaining law and order. They serve in various capacities in the police force, from being the Superintendent of Police at the district level to serving in various specialized units. IPS officers play a crucial role in crime prevention, investigation, and maintaining public order.

In terms of hierarchy, both IAS and IPS officers start at the same entry level and can rise to the highest positions in the civil service. However, the nature of their responsibilities and the specific challenges they face may differ.

A DM or District Magistrate is the administrative head of a district. An SP or Superintendent of Police is the head of Law and Order in a district. However, a DM can summon an SP to take an update of the law and order. In addition, a DM can inspect the police stations and jails in his district. Also, the Annual Performance Assessment Report (APAR) of an SP is filed by a DM. In these respects, the DM enjoys slightly superior authority. In terms of perks and benefits, both DM and SP are at equal footing.

It’s essential to note that the power and influence of an officer often depend on individual competence, experience, and the specific role they are assigned.

While both services are vital for the smooth functioning of the government, comparing their power can be subjective as their functions are complementary rather than directly competitive.
